"Every time I play my viola Andrew made, I'm pleasantly rewarded - I highly recommend his instruments for their gorgeous tone in all registers, projection and comfortable build, plus craftsmanship."
Helen Tuckey, Violist West Australian Symphony Orchestra, president AUSTA
Andrew Metaxas studied viola in Perth with Berian Evans, Graham Wood and Alan Bonds at the University of Western Australia then Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. Andrew was appointed as a tutti violist in the West Australian Symphony Orchestra late in 1985, where he remained until 2001. He freelanced with the Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphony Orchestras between 2001 and 2013, before switching his focus to string instrument making, restoration and repairs.
Andrew began an intensive violin-making apprenticeship with John Ferwerda in Melbourne in 2011 and established his own workshop in 2014. As part of his professional development, he has consulted with other luthiers around Australia and New Zealand, including Arthur Robinson, Philip Smith, Andrew Tait, Paul Davies and Tobias Widemann.
